The envelope I didn't open

What is something you see, believe, or do differently now than you once did?

I open every bill the day it arrives. For most of my twenties I let envelopes stack up on the counter unopened for weeks.

What triggered the change?

A medical bill I left on the counter for two months went to collections. The amount was small. The phone call was not.

What made you realize there was no turning back?

Sitting on hold, reading my own name back to a stranger and realising the problem had never been the money. I could have paid it in October. I just hadn't looked.

How did the change influence who you are today?

I stopped treating not knowing as a form of safety. It shows up well beyond money now. I'd rather have the bad number in front of me than the vague dread. I'm harder to frighten with an envelope.
